Feeling Too Busy? 4 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Burn Out
“I’m too busy and something needs to change…” If that’s looping in your head, you’re far from alone. For many
Every successful business needs two forces working together: the Expander and the Container.
The Expander is the visionary—the one dreaming big, seeing what’s possible, and constantly generating ideas for the future. You’re the entrepreneur or CEO who lives in the what could be, excited about new programs, launches, or ways to scale your courses, memberships, or high-level services.
The Container plugs into that vision and brings the how. They focus on the present: prioritizing, planning, streamlining systems, and making sure everything runs smoothly without chaos spilling over. (This is exactly the role I step into as an OBM—your strategic second-in-command.)
Barbara Corcoran (of Shark Tank fame) popularized this idea years ago. She described herself as the Expander—full of bold ideas—and credited much of her massive success to her key partner, Esther Kaplan, who was the ultimate Container. Corcoran ran every big decision through her, balancing passion with practicality. Even as the face of her empire, Corcoran knew: one without the other just doesn’t work.
Great ideas alone don’t build sustainable businesses. As one visionary put it: “I am a true visionary who needs a systems and project oriented second in command to manage all things that lead up to my long and short term goals.“
Without a Container, those brilliant sparks turn into scattered energy—projects stall, teams get overwhelmed, and you’re constantly reactive amid complexity in processes and systems.
On the flip side, a strong Container without visionary fuel might keep things running efficiently… but toward what? Efforts feel directionless, and growth plateaus.
Think of it like water and a glass: You need the water (ideas and passion) to quench the thirst, but without the glass (structure), it spills everywhere. No water? You’re left thirsty despite a perfect container.
Picture this: You (the Expander) wake up fired up with a new idea—maybe a high-ticket program or book launch. You jump on a call: “This is huge! We could launch next month and rock the world!“
Your OBM (Container) responds: “I love the energy behind this—it’s spot on for where we’re headed. We’re already deep into that other launch next month, though. How does this fit? Do we reprioritize?“
You reply: “You’re right, I got ahead of myself. When could we realistically make this happen?“
And they say: “It’ll take 2-3 months to prep properly for the impact you want. Let me plot, plan and map it against our current plan and we’ll nail it down Monday.“
That’s the magic: Passion meets proactive strategy. No deflation, just forward momentum without burnout.
Entrepreneurs often spend 68.1% of their time working in the business—handling day-to-day fires and tasks—instead of on it, like long-term vision and growth. That’s why so many feel pulled back into the business or being too reactive and lacking proactiveness.
When you have a true Container alongside you, that shifts. You reclaim space for revenue-generating activities and big-picture thinking, while operations hum proactively.
We need each other. Expanders bring the inspiration that makes it all worthwhile. Containers bring the structure that turns inspiration into sustainable results.
If you’re an Expander tired of ideas spilling over—or feeling overworked while your vision collects dust—maybe it’s time for your Container.
